It’s called “Stories for Men” and is a project that aims to investigate the phenomenon of domestic violence on men , beaten or abused by their partners. A point of view that the current chronicles certainly do not hardly ever give. Leading this research – which is being started – two women , a researcher at the Department of General Psychology, University of Padova, Sabrina Cipolletta , as a supervisor and his collaborator Lorenza Entilli, doctor in Psychology and student of the specialist, who designed the project and will ensure its implementation.
In this phase they are trying men willing to tell their own experiences , also via Skype and of course ensuring anonymity. “Usually the problem of partner violence is related to man – says the presentation of the project that sent us Lorenza Entilli -. The man is seen only as a perpetrator, never as a victim: the consequence is that when this happens, do not find support from the associations in the area. ” So here is the purpose of the study: to know this sottouniverso fact of suffering in Italy no place to be shared.
“The project started on September 15 and the margin we have to find those who are willing to tell their story is relatively small given that in November we would already have enough participants to begin analyzing the data,” explains Lorenza Entilli. The bulk of the work, that is the analysis phase, will require more than four months and therefore the results will be available in September 2015 .
One not easy to study, given that men are generally very reluctant to talk about subjects like this. “We already have 18 male volunteers throughout Italy and continue to grow. One of them has already participated in interviews for other similar studies to ours and is very interested in telling his experiences because he understood the value of these studies, “explains Entilli that has a little ‘the role of the project spokesman.
But how many signatures are necessary because the project has a highlight? “Research is a qualitative analysis, not quantitative – Entilli precise – and this means that even 5 or 6 would be enough people who will pay to participate in the interview, even we are already well over and we are confident to get to many more participants . Being an exploratory study – continues Entilli – his goal is not to reach an outcome operazionalizzabile (as would a statistician) but permit the understanding of a phenomenon with the language and the representations of those who have experienced these things first hand (and usually the operators have opinions distorted by bias or methodological errors that lead them to think, for example, that the man who suffers violence is necessarily submissive and physically inferior to his partner). ”
There are other studies like that? “There are already first statistics in Italy made by sociologists and criminologists who tell us that this phenomenon exists, and that men who need support have the most difficulty in finding women – says Entilli -. The most important studies that we go back are US and British: the United Kingdom have existed for years of support desks for men (homo and hetero) abused in the relationship with your partner . ”
One wonders what kind of violence suffered men. “And ‘one of the things that this study aims to investigate – explains Entilli -. Indicatively women use a more psychological violence (such as blackmail or manipulation) but there are stories in the chronicle of women pulling objects, beat or stab your partner. For this it is important to emerge this side of the coin. ” Events that occur mainly at home.
